72 will always be my favorite year for the dead! The show has 3 of my favorite songs (and probably a lot of people's), Sugaree, Playing, and Jack Straw. Oh to have been 16 in 1972, I would have probably followed them around!

Thanks Cary,
A fabulous recording of an incredible show. One of my favorites...FOTD is pristine and He's Gone through Sing Me Back Home sounds like it was worth the price of admission alone.

Worth a listen just for that. Also a bouncy fun Friend of the Devil and a moving Sing Me Back Home.

And that's all one should need to say. The only other commment I would make is WHAT is that sound coming out of Phil's bass at exactly 30:12 of The Other One? Sounds like he plugged the analog bass synth of doom in for a second. Never heard that from a bass before. But then again I never heard anyone play bass like Phil.

Cary Wolfson, you rule for putting this up. I love this recording. Yeah, the tambourine gets a bit unbearable, but Judy almost balances it out with some charming avant-garde playing here and there. Fabulous Bird Song (in a month of fabulous Bird Songs), furious, if frustratingly mostly muffled Truckin, and of course solid '72 playing throughout, but the centerpiece is no doubt He's Gone>monster Other One>Sing Me Back Home, which is capped by one of Garcia's absolute best cowboy solos. What a tone. A must listen.

It's been a while since anyone commented on this one, so, as the guy who taped it, let me chime in. My then-girlfriend and I moved in together the day of this show. I had seen GD in SF in 1970 and this was a chance to drag along my friends who had never seen them but had heard me rave about them for a couple years. We were ably abetted by some of the nicest LSD I ever ate.
I used my trusty Sony TC-124 with its "one-point stereo" mic. During the set break, I fastidiously put the plastic cover on the microphone to protect. The second set opened with an outrageous "Truckin'" and about halfway through I realized that I'd never taken that cap off the mic. You can hear me say "Oh, shit" before the sound explodes from its muffled state. I think it's the high point of the recording.
I was so glad when this came out as DP23 and I could hear it unblemished (and without my friend Judy's incessant tambourine banging away). All in all, though, I think it's a pretty good AUD for its time and I still have a soft spot for it.
BTW, that girlfriend's name is Nancy and we got married five years later. Today is our 35th wedding anniversary.

It's worth getting this AUD tape, in order to patch in the missing segment of PITB that is cut on the SBD. It's quite a tasty PITB, too bad the SBD cuts near the end, but that's why we fall back on the AUDs.

Look, it's 72! Fall 72 at that! That almost automatically gives it 5 stars if the sound's good. 72 for me is their most consistently good year. The show was good enough to be a DP. This recording is just slightly speedy, but not enough to matter. It's an incredible AUD from 72, when AUD's could be unlistenable.

Let's see, this show has been released as Dick's Picks 23, and that was my very first Grateful Dead CD. Highlights for me are TN Jed, it's the best version they played. Playing In The Band, almost spacey, but still on planet earth, MS Half Step is real nice and pretty laid back, this is my favorite Sugar Magnolia, just listen to Jerry rip it up from 4.58 to 6.03 (DP23 timing). And, because it was left off DP23, I can finally hear the One More Saturday Night, it's pretty awesome.

I give it a 5, only a fool would pass up this download.

decent sounding AUD here....
the vocals are a little hit or miss, but you get yet another WELL JAMMED 72 Spectacular with bird song, playin, china>rider, he's gone>other one.... and a nice 1/2 step, one of the 1st ten ever.
worth it for the highlights
